Mineral pigments and gold. painted on 2005. Size 43x33cm The subject of this painting is Vajrasattva, who is an important deity in Tantric Buddhism who stands at the head of one of the “clans” of Buddhas (that of Aksobhaya). He is often portrayed at the top of thangka paintings of Buddhas and other figures from this group, where he is regarded as the originating deity who manifests the other forms.
Vajrasattva holds Bell (Drilbu) and Thunderbolt (Dorje), the two symbols together representing the union of wisdom and compassion. He sits on a lotus throne, surrounded by peonies and precious offerings.

Mukti Singh Thapa is one of Nepal's foremost traditional painters and one of the principal originators of the revived Newar style of painting. A Magar from Bandipur in the Eastern hills, Mukti Singh came to Kathmandu and began painting in the mid 1970s, and quickly became attracted to the early medieval Newar style of the 13-16th centuries. In this style he has become a master, one of the only painters using this style and associated techniques who does not rely on copying earlier works, preferring to design his own compositions within the bounds of the Newar paintings iconography and canon. He paints almost exclusively in the natural pigments of the Newar palette.

This exhibition displays the works in Mukti's atelier at the end of 2007.
